My Safe Place is Gone...

Greetings,

They took away my social safe place, the place where I was safer from the virus. It was washed away by bureaucracy and a lack of thought for those less fortunate than others, once again; a misinterpretation of the statistics could be claimed, but still there was no thought.

Like many other things in this "brave, new world" we live in those with disabilities and illnesses are left behind.  Like the policies of those who think that "trickle down economics" work for the people of a lower socio-economic level. People with disabilities, including those with chronic illnesses are the forgotten victims of progress, forgotten because they are an inconvenient truth that presents their hypocrisy.  I would claim on this basis that statements about "inclusivity" are window-dressing and nothing more.

The rights have been torn from those with no choice, those with chronic illnesses and who are immunocompromised and given to those who made one i.e., not to vaccinate.

In line with its policies, the SCA (Society for Creative Anachronisms) in Australia reviewed its "SCA Lochac COVID Response Plan" and turned it into little response at all. They removed the requirement that attendees were vaccinated removing that shield that was in place, that safe place to go while all the world is insane. They have removed the last barrier to assist in the prevention of these people who are especially vulnerable from contracting COVID-19 at one of their events.

There are those who cannot have the vaccine. So other people vaccinate as a barrier around them, so they do not pass the virus on to them. There are those who have tried to vaccinate, but cannot vaccinate. So other people vaccinate as a barrier around them, so they do not pass the virus on to them. These are the people who have medical exemptions, they have had medical advice that says that they cannot vaccinate. They could go to events and be shielded, because people at events were vaccinated.

There are those who are especially vulnerable. Here I speak about those who are immunocompromised, and this can occur for many different reasons. On the same list of vulnerable individuals I place those who have chronic health issues, I place myself here as well. The vaccine helps these individuals to protect them and assist them so they are not affected as much by the virus, some fall into the category above. These people could go to events because others formed that shield to protect them.

The shield that I speak of is vaccination. It does a far better job of preventing people from contracting COVID-19 than the human immune system alone. This has been proven again and again. It has also been proven that the vaccine also reduces the effects of COVID-19 if it is contracted.

Speaking of the human immune system, those who are especially vulnerable will suffer a lot more than the average person who contracts COVID-19 and this is the reason it is so important that the shield of vaccination is in place. The removal of this shield, requiring attendees to be vaccinated, means that it is now dangerous for people who are vulnerable to attend events.

The COVID Response Plan has turned into a shadow of its former self. It looks like the minimal community standards. This is the claim that is made by some, that it is now "in line with community standards."

Look out into the community, check the numbers of people being infected per day (if you can find it) and tell me how well their "plan" is working. The government's plan is all about ensuring that the economy keeps moving along, is this all we are worried about now the almighty dollar? Don't people's lives matter anymore? Have they not realised that people cause the economy to work? Have they not realised that the economy is in bad shape because people are sick, because people don't want to go out because of COVID? Nope, the mighty dollar must roll regardless of what it does to the people.

While this plan is in effect, you will see people choosing to stay away, because it is to dangerous for their health. Such mass gatherings without the protection in place are tantamount to not having a plan at all. What it will result in is having fewer of these vulnerable individuals at events. If that doesn't matter, well, it shows exactly how well the organisation thinks of its members, and how much the word, "inclusivity" really means.

To be "inclusive" you need to include and give access and opportunity to all those who might  otherwise be marginalised, this includes people with disabilities, and those who are medically vulnerable. This policy, this sham plan, is a disgrace and flies in the face of such a concept. By the allowing of some you exclude others for reasons not of their choosing.

People who have such medical issues would not choose to have them, but they had no choice. People who chose not to vaccinate chose not to vaccinate. This policy takes away the rights of those with no choice and gives it to those who made one and denied access to medically-confirmed, scientifically-tested vaccines. This is what it does. I am disappointed that such a decision could be made of such an organisation with such ideals as it claims.

Regretfully,

Henry.

P.S. This problem with inclusivity is not restricted to the SCA, it is a much broader problem than that. I have previously spoken about the problems with inclusivity in previous posts.

Why we will never be united...

 Greetings,

There are different reasons that we cannot be divided. I have used "never" in the title, but this a strong word. It is possible, but humans will have to get over things in their nature; that thing in their nature which inflames them, that encourages them to contend with their neighbour. The problem is that we are often told how we are different and these differences are emphasised as important, we are never told how we are similar, how we are alike. These divisions separate us and encourage us to build walls between us and divide ourselves even more. There are those who encourage these divisions, who live on the conflict between one another, and it is not just our governments. Maybe there is hope for us, but it will take something, acknowledging our similarities along with our differences.

Humans like to fight...

Human beings claim that we want peace, that we want to get along with one another, but in our essence it is doubtful a truth. Our politics are about contests one political party competes against another for votes, then they spend their entire time arguing about the best way to run the nation. Even in nations where there is a single party, the party spends a large portion eliminating opposition, defending itself against detractors. We enjoy contests against one another this is evident by the prolific presence of sport and the amount of money people are paid to play against one another. We watch these games where one team competes against another, willing one team to win over the other. Other leisure activities also contain conflict within them, usually adversarial, usually against another group of human beings. This fighting nature makes it difficult for us to be united.

Every time the fighting nature is focused outwardly, at least relatively, there are still conflicts within. The invasion of Kuwait in 1990 was condemned around the world. A multi-national force was gathered to stop Saddam Hussein and prevent him from possibly invading Saudi Arabia. Even with evidence of the horrors that Hussein was committing it took months for the force to be assembled. Iraq invaded Kuwait in August 1990, it was not until January 1991, that the multi-national force actually began to push the Iraqi forces out of Kuwait. While this was happening, there were still demonstrations against the action; even after all the negotiations by the United Nations had failed, all the diplomatic solutions had failed. Those same demonstrations continued throughout the war, not that it lasted all that long.

We had a chance to unite when the COVID pandemic struck. Still there were arguments between nations about access to vaccines, who was going to do the research, who was going to fund the research, who was going to take the credit, who was going to receive the vaccines. This is not to mention all of the anti-vaccine, pandemic-deniers, and "freedom" seekers who were against the public health measures. Another chance for humanity to unite behind a cause, squandered by people's pet politics and personal biases and ignorance. The same which is still continuing even as I write.

Why are we divided?

We must look at how we have been divided before we can look at why we are divided, for the how will tell us something of the why. First and foremost, when examining the human being, the first thing that divides us is sexuality, generally this is male and female, but there are also other labels which exist, transgender, for example is another label by which people are known. People are divided by the sexual organs which they possess, but the question of sexuality does not stop there.

In the question of sexuality there is also the question of attraction, to whom the individual is attracted which provides another point by which a person is divided and by which specific communities, and thus divisions are built. There is the emphasis in "normal" society of heteronormality in much of society which supposedly pushes other sexual orientations to the edge. Then other sexual orientations be they bisexual, homosexual, asexual or some other form of sexuality, form communities of their own where they believe their sexuality may be expressed freely. The building of such communities divides us.

We are supposedly divided by race. From one view, there is really one "race", the human race. This is a useful perspective as it unifies rather than divides, however the common approach to the concept is not so unifying a concept. The term race has weight politically and socially, and people will use this as a weapon to divide people to show how they are different. This word is most often tied into the word "racism" a weapon used from both sides. The word ethnicity, is a better description. Again, however, it is dividing people into groups, labelling them as different.

Tied in with ethnicity and race is history, a battleground to say the least especially when one examines the relationships between one some ethnicities and others. These histories are spot-highlighted not to identify those points where they worked together, but where they were divisive. The most often piece of history that will come up is colonialism and how indigenous peoples were treated. This is most often tied in with ethnicity or race.

Politics. Politics is can always be tied to history and ethnicity and it depends on which part of politics that a person wants to examine. Even within an ethnicity politics can divide a people. There are those who go for the right, there are those who go for the left, of politics; most often they do not find much middle ground in between. It only gets worse when it is the extreme of one or the other. Politics is often used by politicians to divide people so they can be controlled, and most people will let them.

Finally, on this list there is religion. This has been a point of division for as long as it has existed. It has been the cause of wars and acts of violence around the world, and still is today. The reason you don't hear about them is that they don't make a big enough impact in the media. Just because you are not looking doesn't mean it is not happening.

Our society is divided by these things and remains divided by these things even at the most important times. Black Lives Matter emphasised the division by race in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic and the problems of the division by race, among other things; there were issues within issues. We remain divided by issues of sexuality because there is an element of wanting to know what other people are doing, rather than allowing others privacy, and leaving other people to their way. Why does it matter what someone else is doing in their bedroom if you're not there, and not involved? The problem is that these divisions are perpetuated.

Divisions perpetuated...

Conflicts are celebrated, or at least the victories of these conflicts are celebrated. These celebrations perpetuate the divisions between people. Battle of Adwa decisive battle of Ethiopia over Italian colonialism. Here we see a celebration of a battle between one ethnic group over another, the raising of an issue which is over a century old, celebrating the victory over colonialism. The same is seen in other parts of the world. The celebration of the Cinco de Mayo is the same, in this case it is the Mexican victory over the French, though many of the tourists who visit to celebrate the holiday have no idea what they are celebrating and are just joining in. The same can be said of many celebrations.

There is a big celebration in Australia which occurs every year, and every year it causes contention. That celebration is Australia Day, it was originally meant to celebrate the landing of the English in Australia; it has since become simply a celebration of being Australian in many Australian's eyes. For the indigenous population of Australia it is often referred to as "Invasion Day" due to the perceived celebration of the invasion of their native land. Once again, a celebration which marks a divisive element it society, though there has been ideas to change it. But there is obviously a division by ethnicity which is hard to close.

The issues in Australia are a problem, this is not to be denied. There is a process which needs to be followed and reconciliation which is required to mend the bridges, and some progress has been made. The issue is that there are elements who will perpetuate the differences, who will always claim that there is an issue, who will always claim there is more to be done. There is also the necessity of both sides to come together, to unite. If the problems are perpetuated, if there is no forgiveness in response to the apology, then there is no reconciliation and it will never end.

Poking the bear...

For some reason people enjoy provoking others to respond either to their side, or to show themselves as being against their position; this is primarily to start discussion, highlighting a particular cause. In some cases this is deliberate because they want to highlight the cause that they are passionate about, in other cases it is because they simply want to start discussion, because they enjoy discussion.

There is nothing wrong with lively discussion, even good reasoned argument, when those arguments turn nasty is when there are real problems and divisions are exposed. These divisions can be reduced by the two people agreeing to disagree, but most often they are not; both sides will pick their points and continue to argue their points until the division widens between them and there is a long way back to seeing that they have similarities as well as differences.

Issues should be raised, be they social or political, when they are appropriate, i.e. when they are relevant to the situation, but issues are often raised when a current situation has nothing to do with the  issue raised. A situation is sometimes turned to that particular person's political or social bend so they can highlight their particular social issue, to beat their drum about the social issue. This often causes more division than it does highlight the issue, especially when the issue was not of a concern to begin with; often it results in people being wary about what they speak about with that person, erecting walls, dividing once again.

These issues are often raised for one of two reasons, to make the person look important, to inject themselves into the situation and make themselves the centre of attention, or for making some political or social point. The last one is the most often case with politicians and activists, but it can also occur in normal life situations. Issues are raised just for the pure purpose of highlighting injustices done. Once again, due to the arguments that ensue such issues usually don't result in rational discussion but emotional argument dividing rather than uniting.

All bad news?

Is it all bad news? Can we never be united? Is there never a time when we can be united, is it never possible for people to come together united? Is there no way?

What has been presented are the ways in which we are not united and the reasons that we have problems uniting. It comes down to a very simple problem; we are too busy looking for reasons that we are different to one another. These differences were presented at the beginning of this discussion. These differences do not acknowledge the things about us that are the same.

We are all human beings.

We all live on this planet.

We all breathe the same air.

We all deserve certain human rights (this one covers a lot of things).

We all have relatively short lives (in comparison to the length of history).

We all have dreams and aspirations.

We all laugh, cry, and smile.

We all have our good days, and our bad.

We all have days when we work hard, and others when we are lazy.

We all want to be well-liked.

Here are ten things that we all have in common. These are things which every human being on the planet shares with every other human being on the planet. If this is not a place to start uniting, then our future truly is bleak. Everyone feels small and helpless looking at the state of the world. You don't have to be a world leader to start the healing, start with a person you know. Talk to them, find commonality with them, acknowledge your differences, but also acknowledge where you are the same. Step outside find another person, do the same thing. Greet people on the street with a friendly smile, bring friendship to the stranger, treat the person in the shop with kindness; if everyone did these small acts all the time the world would be a much nicer place and people would realise they are more alike than they knew.

Cheers,

Henry.

What's 100% Effective? Vaccine Arguments

 Greetings,

One of the complaints about the COVID vaccines has been that they are not 100% effective and they are not 100% safe. Well, I hate to be the person to tell people, but there is nothing in this world which is 100% effective and 100% safe, yet the same people use a variety of these products everyday of their lives. Further some of these things which they use can be dangerous, just as they claim that the COVID vaccines can be. Hell, I am not even just going to focus on the COVID vaccine, let's open this to all vaccines, and many of us had these when we were children. You know those shots that prevented you from getting things such as measles, mumps, rubella, Hepatitis B, tetanus, diptheria, tuberculosis and many more.

Don't Know What's In It

Most people don't know what's in most of the things that they consume. Most people don't read the packaging, don't understand what the ingredients are, and don't care. This goes as much for food as it does for medication. Unless you are a specialist in pharmacology, I challenge you to name the composition of any drug that you take on a regular basis. Let's go even more simple than that, name all the constituent chemical components of panadol or aspirin. Yet people will quite happily take these off the shelf and take them without any question about what's in them. Further, most people give no regard to the fact that they can also be dangerous if not taken as directed.

They Can Be Dangerous

Yes, so can scissors if they are used incorrectly, or a knife, or any sharp implement you find in your home. For that matter if we are confining things to a medical nature, to go back to good old panadol. If you take more than the prescribed amount in the prescribed period, panadol can kill you, and if it does not kill you it can leave you with permanent liver damage. Indeed, if you already have liver damage from some other reason, it is advised that you don't take the stuff because it can cause further liver damage. This is "just" panadol.

They're not 100% Effective

There is a long list of things which are not 100% effective that we still use, in fact there is nothing which is 100% effective. Ask anyone who has been amazed that they have gotten pregnant after using contraceptive protection. Neither the contraceptive pill nor condoms are 100% effective, yet they are used. Parachutes are not 100% effective, there is always the chance that they will fail, this is the reason that they now include an emergency parachute, and even that is not 100% effective. The flu vaccine is not 100% effective, in fact it is usually only 75% effective protecting against three out of four strains of the influenza virus, but some protection is better than none in my books. Notice how you need a "booster" for tetanus every 10 years or so? Do you know why? Same reason we need boosters for the COVID vaccine, to maintain its effectiveness over time.

Things are improving...

Over time scientists will become more familiar with the COVID-19 virus, and its different strains, and they will develop better and more effective ways of dealing with it, and more effective vaccines. We need to be patient and follow what they say. Mistakes will be made, and the initial attempts will be not as effective as later versions, however it is important that the support is there.

More importantly each of us has an important role to play in spreading the right information. Properly sourced information, information which can be backed by science, not conjecture, not some half-baked theory of some amateur, but by scientists. Getting a vaccine doesn't just protect you, it protects your family and friends, you are doing something for your loved ones, and their loved ones. It is for the greater good that you do it, not just yourself. Look at the bigger picture for a change, rather than just yourself.

Cheers,

Henry.

Unenforced Rules

 Greetings,

There are rules and legislation which are intended to protect us from harm, but what good are these rules and legislation if they are not enforced in some measure? Laws are only as strong as those people who are willing to enforce the laws, even if they do not believe in the laws. It is not their job to believe in the laws, it is their job to enforce them. A prime candidate for this one is in Queensland, Australia, in regard to the wearing of masks on public transport, no doubt soon to be repealed as restrictions soften.

The Rule

On the Queensland Government website it is still stated that:

"Public Transport and ride share: must wear a mask including while waiting for the transport in a public space such as a bus stop, taxi rank or train station."

Indeed, if you go to a Translink (Queensland Transport/Queensland Rail) railway station you will find a sign which looks something like this:

The sign clearly states that wearing a mask is "mandatory on public transport". A person travelling on public transport must therefore wear a face mask to travel, or face some penalty. This would be the logical reading of this wouldn't it? People who do not, should be stopped and either forced to wear one or have some sort of penalty imposed, yes? Why is it then that we see so many people who happily travel, and have travelled on public transport without a face mask?

First, some of these individuals have exemptions, this is understood. But by and large the ones who do not do not have these exemptions. Yet, these individuals walk past officials of all kinds without being stopped. I would put it down to that they have no consideration for their fellow man. You do not wear a face mask in a pandemic only for your benefit, but also for the benefit of those around you. These individuals are simply showing how selfish they are. Moving back to the point of the matter.

These unmasked individuals walk past a variety of officials unchallenged. I would ask, who has the authority to enforce this rule? What penalty is there for not wearing a mask on a train or other form of public transport, with this legislation in place? Some of this will be answered. Some of this will fall into some very "grey" areas.

Definitions

1. Face mask

"Face mask means a flat surgical mask, P2/N95 mask or a cloth face mask with three layers that covers the nose and mouth (but does not include a face shield).
Note – a scarf or bandana is not a face mask."

Going by the definition from the Queensland Government documentation, there are lots of alternative "masks" which do not qualify. Wrapping a piece of cloth about your face, or sticking your nose and mouth beneath your shirt do not qualify. Neither, does it seem, do many of the home-made masks which have been produced and worn in their thousands... according to the definition, some only have two layers. One big "grey area" that people like to ignore when quoting the rules and regulations. It would seem that this definition has been relaxed a bit with the shortage of commercially available masks, without having been re-written from its original.

A lot could be said about the proper wearing of the mask. How some people think that having it under your chin is sufficient, because they are "wearing" it. For some others having their nose pointing out above it is also alright. The mask must cover your mouth and your nose to do the job properly. You might as well not be wearing it at all. It is like having safety glasses worn on your elbow while working; or leaving your kitchen mitts in your pocket while you pick up the hot tray out of the oven; or your hard-hat hanging on your belt, none of which will protect you. I think this is sufficient on this subject... at least for now.

2. Emergency Officer

"Emergency officer (public health) means an emergency officer appointed under the Public Health Act 2005.

Note: Emergency officers appointed under the Public Health Act 2005 include public health                  officers and police."

From the same document as the previous as would be clear, because the definitions should all be drawn from the same document. This will impact on who is able to impose the penalty which is detailed below. The definition states that officers are appointed under the Act, and include public health officers and police. There is no mention of public transport personnel, who are thus prevented from acting. So, they can make a rule, but not enforce the rule; a tiger with no teeth, and no claws, it would seem. If a public transport officer were inclined, they could detain an individual, but I surely have not seen it. Police patrol trains, but not as often as unmasked individuals are present, and they are mostly looking for train-jumpers, i.e. people not paying fares. More revenue-raising, at least speeding fines convince people to slow down; Queensland Transport is the only state transport reputedly to have made a profit, so it's not like they need the money. Speaking of fines...

Penalties

Should a police officer decide to detain an individual for a breach of the Public Health Act 2005, which is what not wearing a mask, under a condition where wearing a mask is mandatory is concerned, occurs. Then the penalty is detailed in its usual bureaucratic fashion.

"PART 3 – PENALTIES

A person to whom the direction applies commits an offence if the person fails, without reasonable excuse, to comply with the direction.

Section 362D of the Public Health Act 2005 provides:

Failure to comply with public health directions

A person to whom a public health direction applies must comply with the direction unless the person has a reasonable excuse.

Maximum penalty—100 penalty units."

The penalty does not look particularly stiff, for those who have no idea what a "penalty unit" consists. This requires further research to ascertain how much such a penalty is worth. So I did some digging, to be as forthcoming with the information as possible.

According to the Penalties and Sentences Regulation 2015, the prescribed value of a penalty unit is $137.85, meaning the maximum penalty is $13,785. Obviously this would not be imposed for a person simply not wearing a mask, but could be imposed for other breaches of the same Public Health Act 2005. A person, resisting arrest, spitting on an officer, while not wearing a mask, while in the process of a legal detention could be up for a quite severe penalty, for example.

What's the Point?

Rules and regulations, we like to think and hope, that they are written for our benefit. In the case of the COVID-19 pandemic, the increase in restrictions on certain activities and additional requirements has been to prevent its spread. Some will claim it has been to restrict our freedoms.

Here is a counter-point argument to the restriction of freedoms argument, especially one for all the conspiracy types out there. For years the governments have been trying to get into our lives to identify us; They have installed cameras on buildings and in public transport to identify us. Now they are asking us to wear masks which cover up half our faces, which make it harder to identify us, and its a conspiracy to restrict our freedoms. I would think that the mask mandates would be embraced. Now you have a reason to walk into places you could never have before with a mask on and no one will bat an eyelid. You're talking about waking people up, how about you actually do something for other people and fulfil your identity-defeating dreams, and wear a mask.

If a rule is made then it should be enforceable and it should be enforced. In the case of those not wearing masks on public transport: they should be removed at the next stop in the case of trains, denied entry, if they try to board buses; and fined and if they are caught by police. Only enforcement, and public notification of this enforcement; let people know that people are being fined, or removed from public transport, will cause certain people to stop and actually consider following the rules put in place.

There is a certain portion of the community who will follow legislation and rules because they know its purpose; to keep people healthy and safe. These are not the people that are being described here. These people are happy to comply, more than willing to do so, concerned for their own standing, if not good citizens concerned for other's welfare.

If not all public transport personnel, then at least the Transit Officers should, at least for the period of the pandemic, have the power as well as their usual duties, the power to enforce public health mandates as well. There needs to be more enforcement of this rule to have any effect on those members of the public who have not realised its import, and need to be reminded that if being a "good citizen" is not enough, there is always the "other" way, which will cost them more than the price of a mask.

Cheers,

Henry.

About History

 Greetings,

Having seen a lot of things about showing "history that should not be forgotten" I have decided that it is time that I make my comments about history and its writing and its importance. Just to set the record straight; from some one who has actually studied the subject for most of my life, from someone who is actually qualified in the area. Yes, I am one of those rare people who did the course and finished it, hell, I went back and did Honours just to make sure I had it straight.

Frankly, I am surprised I have not written on this subject sooner considering it is my subject area, more than politics, though much of politics is explained by history, but I suppose we will get to that eventually. I was the kid who decided he wanted to be an historian early in their schooling career, so I have been studying history in some capacity ever since. What does this mean? It means that I have been pawing through old books, comparing incidents then with incidents now. I can say for sure, people have not learned a lot overall.

"Alas! Hegel as right when he said that we learn from history that men never learn anything from history." G.B. Shaw - Preface to Heartbreak House

The Economy

We have a great standard of living in the "First World" (depending on where you look), we have great access to information (again, depending where you look), great access to health-care (again, depending where you look), and amazing technological advances at our finger-tips (do I have to say, "depending where you look"?). What's all this "depending on where you look" business? Well, all of these advances are available to the upper echelons of society for sure, in the First World, but as you go down the social hierarchy, not so much; in some cases very not so much. Why am I pointing this out?

Some couple of centuries ago, in the same equivalent "First World" nations, there were those at the top who lived well, and there were those on the lower rungs who did not live particularly well. No change there. The date has changed, the technology has changed, the economics are all the same. Push it back more centuries you have the same thing. So what has the human race learned over the past several centuries: Greed is good, because it puts you at the top and gets you the best things. So, some will claim that our political system has changed, and improved.

Politics

"POLITICS. The conduct of public affairs for private advantage." Ambrose Bierce - The Devil's Dictionary

In most of those same "First World" nations, people enrol to vote, once every four years (depending on the system). They vote for someone who claims that they will do things for them that will improve their lives. Most of these Candidates are members of Parties, who then decide what the individual will actually do if they are voted in. Independents, most often do not have much say, unless they happen to hold the balance of power, and then they choose to follow one side or the other. Once the candidates get into office they become Politicians, who are primarily interested in keeping their position, more than serving their constituents, because the job pays well (go back to the economy bit above because it places them instantly in the upper echelon). The individual gets a choice once every four years, unless there is some special circumstance that causes it to occur earlier.

The most representative democracy was in Athens and only male citizens were allowed to vote. This is held up to be the most representative democracy, the birthplace of democracy, the basis of all democracies which followed it. "It's now better than it was." How? In Republican Florence the noble families were represented in their Republic and decided what would happen in their city and its surrounds. "That's an oligarchy and not representative." Really? How is it any different to the rich families who present their Candidates for elections, or give fat campaign contributions to influence Politicians? How is our supposedly representative democracy any different? Because we get to elect our representatives. See how much funding that costs and see how many "average individuals" could afford it and see if it is truly "representative." They represent whoever gives them the biggest donations, for which they also give big fat tax breaks. Politics is a rotten system that is up for sale to the highest bidder, look at how they vote on social issues.

"An honest politician is one who, when he is bought, will stay bought." Attr. Simon Cameron, Republican Boss of Pennsylvania (1860)

Social Issues

Social issues abound in our contemporary era. It is not like they have suddenly appeared, several have always been there, they have only more recently been more highlighted. Issues of sexuality are present in the Bible giving indication of their ancient origins. Questions about feminist ideals have been present throughout history with many strong female figures being present throughout history, though many of their histories have been denied, or re-told to suit male historians. Racial issues have been an ever-present issue throughout history, along with religious ones, and the cause of many of the greatest wars of history. It is true that in the last few centuries we have damaged our planet more than in all the centuries previous, and there is something that needs to be done about it, but even this is not something new, the evidence has been there for sometime, with pollution irreversibly damaging and changing environments.

The concept of political correctness, or being politically correct (PC) has been around now for about fifty years, at least according to Wikipedia. This idea has changed our language and changed how we address subjects and also people. It involves the use of inclusive language and so forth to ensure there is no offence given to individuals when speaking. This has been pushed into other areas rather than just language. It has been used to address many of the social issues which were mentioned above to increase the level of tolerance toward people, and reduce friction.

There has been a point where this concept has been pushed to a point where people have, in some situations, become gender-neutral. I will give an example. In a previous time it was polite for a gentleman to open a door for a lady. Now, a female might take offence at this action for its potentially condescending nature. This is a simple example where an act of assistance, of politeness previously has been reversed. The act of assistance may be performed for any individual out of politeness, regardless of gender or other defining feature, it's just a polite thing to do. The reduction of such actions reduce politeness due to the potential of offence that may be caused; an ironic reversal of the inclusive intent of being PC.

Historically, politeness was expected in many different ages and it can be traced through different ages through manuals of the period. This is an aspect which seems to be missing in our current age, a lesson that we have lost. The problem is that we are too busy focusing on our differences to notice the aspects that are the same. It is difficult to convince people to unite against a global threat, such as pollution, or a pandemic, when we are too busy being shown our differences, through the highlighting of historical and present situations of difference.

Unity

Humanity. This is an important word and one that should unify us all. It is a lesson from history that throughout all of the conflicts and other horrible things that have happened throughout history that we have seen that we have forgotten. Why was the United Nations formed? To bring the world together. How is this possible with all the different religions and races? Because they are all focused (or were focused) on the same thing, a global threat. Unfortunately that has gone for many. We have lost the lessons of history... again.

COVID-19 was a chance to bring the world together again. Instead the nations of the world used it as a chance to fracture the world, to show our differences again. A unified front against the virus would've helped a lot, and likely reduced its effects, but we were too busy looking inward, comparing "us" and "them"... again.

Too often we see people showing the pieces of history which fracture, rather than those that bring us together. They show the ones that "must not be forgotten" because they are shocking; because they show how someone did something bad to another human being, or one group against another group of human beings; because they show our differences; they do not show pieces of our histories where people came together and helped one another, assisted one another, showed their humanity.

The greatest lesson that we can learn from history is that: we all do horrible things; we all make mistakes; we all live on the same planet; we share the air we breathe; we all have people we care about, and who care about us; we all have the capacity to do good things; we all have the capacity to help one another and improve others' lives; we all have the capacity to work together with those who are different to us; we are all really not that different; we are all human beings.

Maybe, just maybe, if we can learn that lesson from history, then this world might have a hope.

Cheers,

Henry.

It's 'Just' the Flu

Greetings,

The expression "It's just the flu." is of concern. In our current situation it is being used to refer to what novel coronavirus (COVID-19) is not. This is not just a case of the flu as the mortality rates show. The flu is not "just" the flu either.

Most people associate the flu with a little discomfort, a cough, a fever, runny nose, a couple of days of work and you're back to normal again. No problems at all, right? This is the impression people have of the the flu or influenza. The facts about the flu are quite a bit more different and needs attention paid to them.

"a 2019 study estimated 99,000 - 200,000 deaths from lower respiratory tract infections directly caused by influenza." Paget, John et al. "Global mortality associated with seasonal influenza epidemics: New burden estimates and predictors for the GLaMOR Project." Journal of global health vol. 9,2 (2019): 020421. doi:10.7189/jogh.09.020421 (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6815659/).

Of course, this is "just" the flu. Those numbers are worldwide and they really do not compare to the COVID-19 numbers, but flu season is upon us. Do we really need something on top of the concerns about COVID-19? Do we really need people sick from both of these things increasing the potential for increased mortality rates?

The other thing is that there is a vaccine for the yearly flu strain every year. It protects against most of the strains of the flu. Yes, it does not protect against them all, but protection from some is better than no protection at all. This is something that people can do and they don't. Why? It's because it's "just" the flu.

People don't bother with the flu vaccine so they may get sick. Then when they get sick they don't stay home until they are better again, spreading the flu to others. Flu season is the worst time for productivity for all sectors. It costs Australia $34 billion dollars in productivity each year when workers being present and $7 billion while workers are absent (https://thesector.com.au/2019/02/27/flu-costs-australian-employers-7-billion-in-lost-productivity/).

There is the historical example of the Spanish Flu from 1918 - 1920 which cost 50,000,000 deaths, small in comparison to the current crisis, but it was "just the flu". (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spanish_flu) It was also a pandemic, just like the COVID pandemic which we are experiencing now, and there are always new strains that are waiting in the wings.

The flu needs to be taken as seriously as any contagious disease that has the potential to cause deaths in the population. Hopefully people will learn lessons from the COVID pandemic and apply these to the flu and realise that it is not "just" the flu. This concept is one that needs to be erased.

Cheers,

Henry.

Knives Aimed at the Soft Underbelly

Greetings,

Australians seem to have things reasonably well in hand in regard to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic which is sweeping the world. Cases in all of the states of Australia are reducing. This was thanks to the reaction of our governments both State and Federal, putting in place actions to stop its spread. We remember how our governments are handling things quite well, and think that the assistance that our Federal Government under the leadership of Mr Scott Morrison as assisted people with the additions to funds which he has given.

Well, the holiday is over. It is time to get the country up and running again, and Mr Morrison has sharpened up his knives and has them aimed, as usual at the soft underbelly of our society, the most vulnerable.

Two days ago there appeared in the Daily Mail Mr Morrison's refusal to extend the JobKeeper scheme because he "warned against the country becoming 'addicted' to state handouts." (https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-8318569/Scott-Morrison-rules-extending-20billion-month-JobKeeper-scheme.html) This is while our country is seeing the highest unemployment that it has seen in years as a result of COVID-19 and for no other reason. These people did not miraculously lose their jobs because they were lazy just decided to stay home, they had to because regulations required them to, and because that is what is defeating the virus.

In yesterday's Daily Mail there appears another attack on the Australian public, the same public he is supposedly protecting. This time it is against those with children. Free childcare was another measure put in place as a result of COVID-19, well that is another one which is set to disappear, "the prime minister warns he plans to scrap free childcare as soon as possible." https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-8322559/Scott-Morrison-set-scrap-free-childcare-scheme-introduced-COVID-19-restrictions.html Another blow to the public which he is supposedly trying to protect. The only way that people will be able to pay for childcare is for people to go back to work, which rushes people back into public, and close proximity quickly, too fast to ensure a second wave of COVID-19 does not occur, and more damage to the economy that he is so worried about.

Mr Morrison's sights are set on the economy, they always have been. This is his priority. He wants to get the economy back up and running and this is more of a concern to him than the safety of the same people who make that economy work. This is so his 'fact-cat' friends who survive because of the economy can continue making their millions and billions.

Remember all of these things when it comes to the next election.

Cheers,

Henry.
